Yosemite Mountain House

Guest Rating:

Vacation rental cabin / bungalow. Sleeps 4, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. No pets allowed.

49889 Canoga Drive Oakhurst, CA 93644 United States

Staying in this Frank Lloyd Wright style home will make you feel you are living your getaway in special style. Designed and built by a man who used to push off the Firefall in Yosemite, the Mountain House is a wonderful blend of simplicity and artistic style, with rock, glass and wood to set the mood. Those who love Yosemite and the mountains will love this small and unique house. The kitchen, bathroom and living room have been remodeled and upgraded in 2016/17.

Although located near the heart of Oakhurst, the setbacks, size and location of the property make it feel remote and private, with towering trees, a seasonal creek and wildlife and birds to entertain you out the dramatic windows. Yosemite National Park entrance is only 16 miles away, so you can enjoy it's wonders during the day and return to Oakhurst to sample the variety of restaurants (ranging from 5 star to pizza), enjoy the wineries, beer pub and art galleries, shopping, zip line, golf courses, historic attractions or gambling at nearby Chukchansi Casino. Bass Lake and Sierra National Forest, only a few minutes away, also offer a wide range of opportunities for water sports, hiking, picnics and other fun.

Simple in construction and design, the house has a peaceful and unique feel that will make your stay extra special. Large windows cover one entire wall, looking out over towering oak trees and the creek. Open beams and natural rock walls and accents give the house a special ambiance. An indoor garden graces the hallway. Lighting fixtures accent the rock and fine art on the walls. Natural and open, this house surprises and pleases those who spend time here.

A small but fully functional kitchen (complete with all new appliances and new pots/pans) is partially open to the dining room and living room, making food preparation easy if you decide not to use one of Oakhurst's many restaurants. The master bedroom has a wonderful king sized Temperpedic bed, lovely windows and nice wooden furniture including a desk. The (very) small second bedroom has a fold out couch to make a double bed and a nice big window to let the sun shine in. The newly remodeled bathroom has a tub/shower combo, and is equipped with handrails for safety and ease. Cabled wifi, 42' flat screen TV, dvd/vcr players, games, binders of local information, guide books, coffee service and a nice variety of herbs and spices are among the many amenities here.

This house was built by a long term Yosemite National Park resident and it has stayed in the Yosemite family for 40 years. Art and photography by Yosemite artists hang on the walls, and a fabulous binder filled with local knowledge about the park and surroundings will be available to enhance your visit.

This house is wonderful for two people, although it can sleep another couple or child in the fold out double bed in the very small second bedroom. The house is not appropriate for young children.

My wife and I booked the quaint little Mountain Home for the Yosemite 1/2 Marathon. The location was perfect. The charming little house was spotless, very well equipped to prepare meals and close to town. A variety of local birds are a huge plus if you enjoy watching nature.

Perfect little home for a visit to Yosemite. Would be super awesome with a little TLC. Love the design; I'd like to build this home with a mountain view. Kitchen needs some updating and a better supply of cooking pans. The long bench needs new cushions (hard and not comfy). The 2nd bedroom needs a real bed. Love the bathroom. Love the bird feeder and bird viewing, but the backyard is unkept; looks like nobody's been there in months. Again a little TLC would do wonders (but I realize there is a drought). I don't want to sound too critical though because we very much enjoyed our stay. New windows, new bathroom, close to groceries and restaurants, quiet neighborhood, very clean, very interesting history to the house. Loved it, thank you for sharing your unique home with us!

Thank you for your review, and please know that we have put significant TLC into the house since your visit. Among other improvements, the kitchen now has all new appliances, new pots and pans, and upgraded silverware. We have replaced the not-so-comfortable bench cushions with very nice new cushions that are great for relaxing and looking out the windows. We also changed our gardener, so things will be much nicer out in the yard. We are glad you very much enjoyed your stay, and particularly liked the bathroom and all the other amenities of the house. Thanks for your input. Come back soon!

We had a lovely stay in this charming home. It was wonderful to escape the crowds at Yosemite and wake up each morning to all the birds. We even saw baby quails at the bird feeder! The location is a drive from Yosemite sites, but the serenity is worth it.

we absolutely loved our holiday weekend here! was just my boyfriend & i. the simple, kind of throwback style of the house was perfect for us. so many vacation rentals are stuffed with cutesy, bear & woodland knick-knacks, but this just has a wonderful, natural feel to it instead. owners have a long history with yosemite & you feel that. would definitely go back.

A nice, comfortable home, conveniently located in Oakhurst. Cute place, nice floor plan, quiet, and a great alternative to hotel living.

We had read about ants in other reviews, and we had a similar problem. The place would benefit from a new refridgerator and a separate a/c unit for the bedroom. The fridge was an old, small combined fridge/freezer. Freezer didn't work especially well and was small. There is an a/c unit in the living room; hoewver, the bedroom is in the opposite end and too far to get much of the cool air. While not necessary, it would be nice to have a TV in the bedroom. It would also be convenient to have a few basics provided, such as kitchen garbage bags and Kleenex.

The propery manager stopped by the 1st day to mention that the maintenance person would be stopping by to install the new TV that was in a box in the living room. The TV was not installed and didn't hear from the property manager.

Overall, we enjoyed the visit and would stay again!

    Pros:
This is a fairly basic unit that has some very nice stylish treatments - an indoor garden, exposed wood and stone, and a nice, simple, back deck -- which was private enough to sit and enjoy breakfast and coffee outside. There is a small, nice living room area with a flat screen TV. There's a very reasonable gas grill we enjoyed using twice. The unit is quiet and was quite clean (though during the time of year we stayed it was clear ants are a challenge even when you don't leave any food around -- but as we used plastic bags for all our food or kept things in the fridge, it wasn't a big deal unless that kind of thing really bothers you).
The unit is relatively close to town (less than 5 mins by car), and about 15-20 minutes from the south entrance of Yosemite (then about another ~90 minutes to Ahwahnee Lodge).
Cons: It was VERY hot while we stayed, and though there is an AC unit it is in the LR at the far end of the house from the BR. To cool the BR you really need to use the BR ceiling fan and leave the windows open at night.
The fridge and stove could benefit from some updating but both were relatively functional. The stove has seen many years of use, and if there is a microwave we failed to find it (a toaster was found the last morning in the very back of a bottom cupboard).
Picky point, there was no instruction manual for how to get the DVD player to operate -- there was a "home information notebook" that listed the DVD for your use, and a remote marked DVD, but no directions on how to get the TV to interface with the DVD player. The TV acted as though the DVD player was not connected even though the cables were plugged into what seemed like the right connections
Conclusion: Overall, we'd return to this unit if we are back in the area for similar purposes. While we weren't amazed by the unit we certainly found it worked better than ok and was a good base for spending several days exploring various parts of Yosemite NP.
